The Dash in the news

The Dash was one of the 2006 Downtown Excellence Award winners. Each year, the Downtown Winston-Salem partnership hands out these awards to individuals, businesses, and groups that are working towards making a positive impact to downtown life. We are thankful for the help the DWSP has given us as we have developed. We are so honored to have received this recognition in only our first year as a group! Who is The Dash and what are they all about?

In response to the growing concern among community leaders that Winston-Salem is struggling to engage and draw in bright, young citizens, a new grassroots effort has bubbled up in the community “to take the bull by the horns.” We were challenged to answer the question, “What is there to do in Winston-Salem?” and so The Dash was born. Our mission is to attract and retain a younger generation to Winston-Salem through a vibrant downtown setting, ensuring a diverse social climate, economic growth, and a thriving arts and entertainment culture.

Why Now?

Winston-Salem is at a critical juncture of growth. In order to fully capitalize on the growth of Winston-Salem’s arts, entertainment and economic development, young people need to stay in the area and support the cultural outlets that have been made available by other non profit organizations. The leadership of The Dash hopes to provide the human capital to bolster support for the cultural infrastructure that is already in place. The Dash could serve as an orientation team for area businesses who recruit and hire young people to work in Winston-Salem. Also, it is the hope of those involved with The Dash that eventually their efforts will attract young people to live in Winston-Salem. The support of The Dashers is a win-win for all local restaurants and bars; big and small local businesses; and art museums, galleries and venues. The potential ripple affect of The Dash in Winston-Salem is incalculable.

The Dash and the Future of Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem has celebrated many successes in recent years. The City and County successfully brought Dell to Forsyth County in 2004; the development of downtown Winston-Salem has great momentum as new condos and apartments are being built; the concert series in the summers is well attended. Institutions within the community – like Reynolda House, SECCA, Old Salem – need continued support. The younger generation needs to take on a leadership role in the community in supporting the cultural infrastructure in place. With projects like the new baseball stadium coming to downtown, our city needs the support of an active and passionate group to ensure its growth and prosperity.

This community is poised for a diverse group of young, dedicated people to take the city by storm and celebrate the arts and entertainment offered by Winston-Salem. The potential impact of The Dash will ensure the future growth of the young people in this community.
